Parkside Surgical Centre offers repair to the following hernia types.
The most common hernia encountered is the inguinal (groin) hernia accounting for over 80% of referrals. Our preferred technique is low tension, light weight mesh repair under local anaesthetic ( +/- minor sedation). This is recognised as being the best evaluated most used open mesh repair, it is easily reproducible with minimal adverse side effects and is performed on an ambulatory out-patient basis. It has a low rate of recurrence and chronic discomfort and its recurrence rate is comparable with that of keyhole surgery without the potential risks and requirements for general anaesthetic.
The operation is usually completed in 45-60 minutes and after ten minutes the patient is able to walk out of the centre pain free due to the use of long acting local anaesthetic agents. When these wear off there will be some pain and discomfort for a couple of days which is manageable with minor painkillers (e.g.paracetamol and ibuprofen). Early mobilisation is recommended.
Some patients do not wish for the insertion of mesh and in these cases non mesh low tension repairs are offered. In the case of femoral, umbilical and paraumbilical and epigastric hernia the decision whether to repair with just stitches or whether mesh may be needed will be discussed and usually decided on before surgery.
